How Others Influence Your Alcohol Use

How Others Influence Your Alcohol UseWhether good or bad, influences in your life alter the way you make your choices. There are many outside factors that affect the decisions that you make. Every day individuals are bombarded with the opinions of family, friends, corporations and media that either promote or condemn the use of alcohol. One of the most highly used substances in the world, alcohol is everywhere, and outside influences affect individual alcohol use.

Alcohol in a Positive Light

With alcohol, a substance that is not illegal in most cases, there are many positive promotions. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), people between the ages of 18 to 25 spend nearly 30 hours a week watching television. Within these 30 hours, NIAAA reports that positive consumption of alcohol appears in 71 percent of the programs.

Films and television show the fun and parties that come with alcohol, and catchy adult beverage commercials leave a lasting impression with viewers. The media promotes these ads and the use of alcohol due to the revenue that alcohol sales provide.

Alcohol in Another Light

While there are positive promotions for alcohol, it remains a highly addictive substance. Due to this, and perhaps due to the number of deaths each year from alcohol related injuries, there are many campaigns devoted to combating the use of alcohol.

The media also portrays alcohol in a negative light, as many shows feature alcoholic characters. Also, hundreds of organizations exist in the United States that focus on combating alcohol and its effects, including the following:

  • Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP)
  • National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD)
  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

Though not all of these organizations promote an alcohol-free life, they do combine to create a multitude of commercials, pamphlets, rallies and conferences to promote healthy and safe uses of alcohol.

Do Influences Affect You?

Whether good or bad, we are all influenced by outside sources.  We live in a society in which we are surrounded by sources that promote or condemn alcohol use. The key to making the right decisions is to determine safe and appropriate sources that connect you with the choices and life that you want to live.
